How will clean Monday be cleaner? [Feb 2008]

On Sunday, March 16th, a group of volunteers is organising a "Kathari Deftera" clean-up of Schinias Beach. This is a volunteer effort, co-organised by NAVIGATOR Consulting, HELADA (the Hellenic-American Democratic Association), ΜΙΑΦΥΣΙ and others.

Illegal houses already appearing on Mount Parnitha [Sep 2007]

In spite of nice words and promises that not a single tree will be cut down by the Greek Government after the summer fires which destroyed Parnitha national park, the houses in the picture are now being constructed, clearly in the forest area above Afidnes tolls, an area which was spared from the fire. We wonder who and how gave permission.

BEARDED VULTURES SENT TO THE GREEN BALKANS WILDLIFE CENTER [Jul 2007]

A pair of long-expected Bearded vultures /Gypeatus barbatus/ finally arrived in the Wildlife Rescue Centre of Green Balkans on July 15th 2007. Bearded vulture is the symbol of Bulgarian nature conservation, but unfortunately the species has disappeared as a nesting species since the 60-ies. At present there are only records of single wandering individuals on the Balkans. The team of Green Balkans has been discussing the breeding, restoration and conservation of the four vulture species in Europe with various experts from numerous international organizations for ten years so far.

Sunday 8/7/07- demonstration for Parnitha [Jul 2007]

Thousands of citizens gathered st Syntagma square in Athens, on the 8th of July 2007 to protest against environmental degradation, building up of forest lands, inadequate protection of forests and above all the fires which destroyed the national park of Parnitha, the mountain close to Athens.

Day 1 June 16 Report from İzmir

We arrıved in Chios on a boat from Piraeus landıng at 4:30 in the morning and waited until 8:00 to meet Vangelis Kastamoulas to join me for the boat to  Turkey.  Vangelis is a competıtıve racing cyclist, coming in second in Greece's national cycling games.  He arrived wıth an olive tree sapling in his hand for us to plant ın Izmir.

CLEAR ARTEMIS [Jul 2007]

APRIL 15

The migratory birds at small wetland in Artemis,Attica, Greece have to live with an accumulating amount of garbage illegally dumped and gradually covering the water. Adding to this a dirt road has been built and divides the lake in two, altering the hydrology. The international nature network is organizing a clean up, in cooperation with the local municipality in order to stop this and give the lake back to the birds.

TWO PEOPLES - ONE NATURE [Jun 2007]


The International Nature  Network , in collaboration with CycleGreece, the Bicycle Riders Club Of Izmir and Symposium Communications, a historical bicycle project titled "Greece-Turkey: 2 Peoples-- One Nature.”  

Greek and Turkish cyclists will for the first time bicycle together starting in Smyrni (Izmir ) and finishing in Soynio.

The purpose of this novel event is to sensitize the public to the urgent issue of global warming  and Peace and Friendship between the two countries

On Saturday 16 June in Smyrni the opening ceremony will take place with the Greek and Turkish cyclists.  The hosts and organizers of ceremony will be the Izmir Bicycle Riders Club, the Municipality of Izmir, the Turkish Ministry of Exterior Affairs and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.  A tree planting ceremony will take place.

The cycling will last 11 days, beginning Sunday of 17 June from Smyrni.  Each day the cyclists will cover 90 to 100 kilometres as they ride through Turkey, the Greek-Turkey border and head towards Alexandroupoli and Thessalonica.  

On Wednesday 27 June the cyclists will ride from Athens to Sounion where there the final ceremonies will take place with a planting of trees, a cocktail party and a seminar on the subject of global warming.

A DAY FOR NATURE: SOS for Kifisos River [May 2007]

The International Nature Network supports the clean up event of Kifisos River and needs your participation.
 
Sunday 6 May: 10:00 to 13:00 : volunteer  river clean up at the area Adames, Nea Kifissia-- meeting point at Mega Basilopoulos , 20th Klm of the Athens- Lamia National road or at the Kifisia metro station. Transportation to Adames by bus.
  
Sunday 13 May: 17:00 to 22:00, clean up at the river mouth ( between the Peace and Friendship Stadium and the beach voley field. A Vassilis Papakonstantinou concert will follow.

Black Vulture Released in Dadia Forest [Feb 2007]
The scientific team of WWF Greece released a young Black Vulture (Aegipius Monachus) in Dadia forest, Evros Area. It is one of thee nestlings that were rescued by the organization last July, after their nests collapsed because of powerful winds in the region. Systematic follow-up of every Black Vulture nest by the scientific team of WWF in Dadia helped discover two fallen nests and also to rescue another injured young bird.

Stop further destruction of the rivers Drava and Mura! [Feb 2007]

Not only the new dredging plan - public call in "Jutarnji list" from 17 March 2005 for extraction of about 2.000.000 m³ of sediments -, once implemented, has disastrous affects for the unique Drava River . Day by day, gravel and sand extraction and river canalization works by Croatian and Hungarian Water Management Authorities along the Drava as well as Mura river are leading to extensive environmental devastations.

GREEN RAFINA [Oct 2006]
 DAY FOR NATURE
Thanks to the great turn-out during the second voluntary intervention
by MIAFISI International Nature Network, the "Pefkona" region of
Rafina was reforested with over 500  native  Greek trees, mainly pines,
Judas trees and oleander.
