In spite of nice words and promises that not a single tree will be cut down by the Greek Government after the summer fires which destroyed Parnitha national park, the houses in the picture are now being constructed, clearly in the forest area above Afidnes tolls, an area which was spared from the fire. We wonder who and how gave permission.

WHY WAS GREECE LEFT TO BURN DOWN TO ASHES?
A pair of long-expected Bearded vultures /Gypeatus barbatus/ finally arrived in the Wildlife Rescue Centre of Green Balkans on July 15th 2007. Bearded vulture is the symbol of Bulgarian nature conservation, but unfortunately the species has disappeared as a nesting species since the 60-ies. At present there are only records of single wandering individuals on the Balkans. The team of Green Balkans has been discussing the breeding, restoration and conservation of the four vulture species in Europe with various experts from numerous international organizations for ten years so far.
Thousands of citizens gathered st Syntagma square in Athens, on the 8th of July 2007 to protest against environmental degradation, building up of forest lands, inadequate protection of forests and above all the fires which destroyed the national park of Parnitha, the mountain close to Athens.
